I LOVE AMERICA! I LOVE BEING AMERICAN!
However I believe we owe it to ourselves to be better Americans than we have been for the last 40 or more years.
Our recent history has a lot to say about what we are not. Politically Americans are clearly divided. Think small first: imagine that there are only 100 Americans. 46 of us are Republicans and 46 others of us are Democrats and that leaves 8 others who politically comprise the other points of view. So when watching election results that look like this: 46% Hillary, 46% Obama, and 8% divided between all the others translates into a nation divided. Tragedies like New Orleans, the World Trade Center, the loss of Polar Bears, and most importantly the enormous amount of children who are sexually and physically harmed on a daily basis: all of these and so much more point to an America that is failing socially.
Most of us rely on News Sources that exist as money making businesses rather than organizations of truth existing for public benefit. Therefore we are completely unaware that the Nations of the world are suspicious, angry, and feeling the need to defend themselves from America. The world view of America as a great friend, protector, defender, and agent of mercy in crisis is nearly dead. Because our News Sources exist apart from being agents of truth for the benefit of American people, we live from day to day unaware that there is a grand story behind things like the high prices of Gasoline, the health of our Foods, and the lack of medical coverage for most Americans.
Consider how many people disagree with President Bush and wish he would steer in a new direction. There have been moments when the American people have made it abundantly clear that a new direction is wanted and been met with what could be called a defiance of our will. If the current leader feels no obligation to the will of those who have given him his job, in a political system equipped to allow the citizens to fire him/her, then what obligation will that leader feel or choose in relationships that have no power over him? It is therefore most reasonable to conclude that as a people if we have not used the tools given to us by the Constitution to oppose a defiant to the will of the people leadership, then in the eyes of world we are weak and powerless and the defiant leadership has control. Therefore if there is no respect of Americans by her leaders why should the world trust either the leaders or the people of America?
Here is one more example: think of the American economy as a human body. The human body needs a healthy diet of fruits, nuts, good proteins, water and so on. Fatty oily grease in our foods clogs up the body, how ironic. The American Economy / body has become clogged with oil. Most of our stability as an economy comes from oil and its many by-products. Relying on just one or two food groups is not healthy and eventually will catch up with us, and here it is. America as an economic body can no longer depend upon foreign sources of oil. Most people don't even realize that as long as we use as much foreign oil as we do: there is not one of the candidates who can remove us from the middle eastern war zones. Most Americans have no idea how much the two are interrelated.
Bottom line: America is asleep at the wheel of her life. We live uneducated and blinded by ownership of the best. We really do not understand where America fits in a global picture. We do not grasp, as Americans, some basic principles of humanity that could go a long way towards saving us from disaster.
This site is dedicated to the proposition that All people are created equal and endowed by a creator with certain inalienable rights, including but not excluding life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This site exists to discuss solutions to the America that is Asleep at the Wheel.
